of defense leon panetta testifies on capitol hill today about the attacks on the compound in libya. this follows his dire warnings about dramatic budget cuts due to kick in next month. panetta spelled out a list of cuts the pentagon will have to make, cuts he says will seriously undermine the military. susan mcginnis is in washington this morning. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. the cuts are already happening. the pentagon is shrinking its presence in the persian gulf of aircraft carriers. it's par of that long list that secretary panetta that said these cuts are going to have to happen in the coming weeks all because congress cannot agree on an alternative to the budget cuts that are going to kick in as well as a 2013 budget. the "uss truman" was expected to pull out of norfolk tomorrow to head to the persian gulf but wednesday afternoon word came in the truman will stay in port to save money. >> playing the waiting game. it's not very nice not knowing when we're pulling out. >> the pentagon is carrying u.s. presence overseas ahead of $55 billion budget cuts that

morning. the economy remains sluggish challenged by a steep decline in defense spending and the impact of higher social security taxes. susan mcginnis is in washington this morning. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. yeah, we have an economy that's still struggling despite some positive signs like higher consumer spending, higher business investment. the job market is similar. we expect sluggish growth in today's report. of course, any surprises there could jolt the market. wall street is eagerly awaiting the government's january jobs report. analysts predict the country added jobs last month but not enough to buck the unemployment rate from its current 7.8%. >> it's been a slow process. >> latoya patrick is one of america's estimated 12 million unemployed workers. she's been looking for a job since the fall after graduating with a master's degree. >> i'm not going to lie. it's been really tough sometimes. when you're home, you feel like you feel like you know i spent all this time going to school and it's like nobody's giving you a chance. >> economists say until more p

changes following its response to the attack on the u.s. mission in libya. outgoing secretary of defense leon panetta was grilled during the attack on capitol hill yesterday. panetta was pressed about the president's involvement. he said he learned about the assault while meeting with mr. obama. mr. obama told him to deploy forces as quickly as possible, but panetta did not speak to the president after that. >> the event was over before -- >> it lasted almost eight hours and my question to you is during that eight-hour period, did the president show any curiosity about how's this going, what kind of assets do you have helping these people? did he ever make that phone call? >> look. there's no question in my mine the president of the united states was concerned about american lives. >> well, with all due respect i don't believe that's a credible statement if he never called and asked you, are we helping these people, what's happening to them. snopa any ta also said that he supported a plan to help and president obama decided against it. >>> also on capitol hill the drone strike was an iss
